100 Days of Making – Week Two: Creating Coast to Coast
Another week, another batch of EmbellishBits as part of The 100 Day Project—and this time, I took my creative process on the road!
Welcome to Week Two of my 100 Days of Making journey, where I’m bringing you behind the scenes of my project—from my home studio in Florida to my friend Susan’s creative space in California. This week was a mix of packing strategically (because let’s be honest, I always want to bring everything) and embracing creativity in a new environment.
So let’s dive into the week—travel, art supplies, and a creative time.
Packing for Creativity on the Go
I’ll admit, packing art supplies for a trip is a whole thing. My friend Susan has plenty of materials in her California studio, so technically, I could have shown up empty-handed and been fine. But let’s be real—I need my things.
My packing system?
✔ Zipper pouches – Think fabric, photos and negatives, watercolors, little paper bits and tools. (Okay, maybe two for tools. It’s fine. I’m fine.)
✔ Clear folders – Perfect for keeping my papers safe and easy to flip through.
✔ A small pouch for in-transit stitching – Because airport layovers = bonus crafting time. Unless I get pulled into a good movie.
I had to pare things down for flying, but let’s just say… I might be coming home with more than I left with. (Art supplies make the best souvenirs, right?)
Creating in a New Space
Once I arrived in California, it was time to dive into creative time at Susan’s studio. There’s something about a change of scenery that makes everything feel fresh and inspiring.
Here’s what we got up to:
•Working on 100 Days of Making pieces for The 100 Day Project
•Painting papers (because you can never have too many)
•A fun meetup with other nearby creatives
•A local coffee shop, shopping in San Clemente (a favorite of ours), bowls at Active Culture and a great sushi place in Laguna Beach.
•Making eco dyed fabrics and papers (these will be perfect for my bits)
A Special Creative Meet-Up!
One of the highlights of the week was getting to connect with two fellow creatives (Julie Knowles and Karina Alvarez) from The Roben’s Nest creative community in person!
Susan and I hosted a casual meet-up with two local Nesters, and it was an absolute joy. We spent time chatting, snacking, and sharing our work—a little show-and-tell of creative projects, both in progress and completed.
It’s always inspiring to see how different artists bring their unique styles and ideas to life, and this was such a fun reminder that our creative community is so much more than an online space—it’s a place for real connections.
Answering Your Questions: How Do I Store My 100 Pieces?
This week, I got a great question from Michelle on YouTube:
"Although your embellishments are small, when you're making 100 things, how do you store them throughout the project?"
Great question! Right now, I’m using:
•Dough bowls – These vintage wooden bowls are perfect for keeping my pieces visible and easy to sort through. Since I am currently away from home creating, this is the perfect vessel for my bits.
•Baskets & clips – Sometimes I clip pieces onto long pieces of ribbon near my art table so I can see them as I work. Baskets are also perfect.
•Zipper pouches – While traveling, a padded pouch keeps everything safe and organized.
As my collection grows, I’ll probably switch things up—but for now, I love having my pieces out where I can see and be inspired by them.
Wrapping Up Week Two
This week was a mix of creating, traveling, and adapting—but that’s part of the fun!
I’m feeling inspired and ready to dive into Week Three, where I’ll be back home and bringing new ideas into my project.
