You have the perfect photo, but you sit there with your fingers hovering over the keyboard not sure what to write in the caption. You're not alone!

In this episode, hosts Roben-Marie and Sandi share ten practical places to start when creating thoughtful captions for your social media posts sure to encourage engagement from your followers.

1. Ask a question

Getting a conversation started under your caption is a great option. Asking things like “what’s your favorite____?” or just asking for suggestions from followers can create great engagement, give you helpful answers and even encourage viewers to share your post with others who may want to chime in.

2. sharing personal thoughts or stories

Dive into the story or technique behind the image you’re sharing. People are likely following you because they want to know more about you or your process so let them see behind the curtain! Share interesting stories that go beyond the image they’re seeing will add to the experience.

3. Why is it important?

Highlight the importance or significance of the image you’re posting. Give followers some insights into why it it is important to you.

4. Discuss technique

As a creative, most of your followers are likely interested in your artistic process. Breaking down techniques that can be hard for people to grasp or showing snippets of your process and explaining that in the comments can add more value than you may realize!

5. highlight supplies

If your posts are centered around your work, highlighting supplies that have had an impact on it can be super helpful. Opening your followers up to new options or finding common ground with tried and true products and tools is another great way to spark conversation.

6. share useful tips and tricks

Sharing tips and tricks your followers will benefit from with will add value to your account. Save someone time or money with shortcuts and advice and they’ll likely be back for more.

7. take people behind the scenes

What do you have going on behind the scenes? Would it surprise people or make for interesting conversation? Know that sharing the imperfect parts of your story help to keep you relatable. Along with your beautiful images, share your messy art table…areas outside that image.

8. Works in progress

If you’re working on something that you’re super proud of then share your progress, giving insights into your process. Opening up keeps you warm and inviting while you’re adding value to your community with valuable insights.

9. life updates

Share your life experiences. Diving into the life you have beyond your social feed adds to the richness of your follower’s experience. They want to get to know the artist behind the posts. Even things that may seem unrelated, tie into the bigger story of who you are as a creative.

10. Share the inspiration behind the photo

As Roben-Marie and Sandi explain, the possibilities are endless with this one. The motivation behind the work you’re sharing, the experience or image you’ve captured all have a story. So do the people you include in your posts. Dive into the story behind any of it and you’ve done your job of engaging your following.
