019: Organizing Creative Spaces - Part One
Topics Discussed and Key Points
•What drove each of us to a major overhaul of our space
•What are our organizing obsessions
•How we organize specific categories of supplies
In this two-part episode, Roben-Marie and Sandi discuss organizing your creative space and art supplies, going from general advice down to specific tips and tricks.
“It’s so easy to get unorganized in your art space,” says Sandi. Roben-Marie completes this thought by noting that, “The table starts out great, and then all of a sudden, your space ends up becoming the size of a plate.” Overwhelm then sets in. Oftentimes, however, we overestimate the amount of time it actually takes to clean up our workspace.
Roben-Marie suggests “starting from ground zero” if your space gets to the point that you lose things and can barely move around. Don’t wait to fix it up, because chaos creeps up, and before you know it, your place is a mess—especially if you do art full-time.
“Our rooms reflect the artist we used to be,” states Sandi. Don’t get attached to supplies that you no longer use. Clear out some space and limit yourself to the tools that you currently use at this specific point in your creative life. It helps to go through your workspace, pick something up, and ask yourself, “Does this reflect the artist I am now?” If the answer is “no”, consider donating it to a school.
When it comes to favorite resources for organizing, Roben-Marie likes her mugs and cups, vintage sewing machine drawers, and trinket dishes. Sandi is “obsessed” with acrylic organizers. Experiment to find out what works best for you. The tools you end up using most often really depends on your unique organizational and visual style.
