Is your work inspired or copied?
The trick is “putting your own twist on” something you learned before. Roben-Marie says that she loves using colors together in a certain way, or specific techniques in putting together collages. That, to her, is inspired work. However, creating an exact replica of an existing piece of art and claiming it as your own idea is a no-no.
Is it ever okay to copy someone else's art? It depends on the situation. You could be taking a course, either through college or self-study. “Copying when you’re learning is okay,” says Roben-Marie. But when you’re ready to do your own work, especially if you intend to share your work to the world, then it’s best to take inspiration from the masters rather than simply taking an existing piece, recreating it, and altering a few details ever-so-slightly. That is not only disrespectful to the artist, but it won’t do anything for your own creative growth. If you do share copied work from, say, a class, be sure to credit the artist.
Related to the topic of taking a course, when doing work assigned to you by your instructor, it’s disrespectful to both the instructor and paying students to show off your process by posting it online. Posting the finished product (with proper attribution to the instructor) is okay; but including the process isn’t, because you’re essentially giving your instructor’s lesson away for free. “This is class material that people paid for and you cannot take that away,” says Sandi.
